10 10 10 Tottenham spent £10m on Gareth Bale and sold him to Real Madrid for £85m – Spurs beat Man United to the signing of Southampton prospect Bale in 2007 and spent six years growing his reputation at White Hart Lane. Then Real Madrid knocked and Daniel Levy told them to fill his vault with vast sums of money £85m so he could swim about like Scrooge McDuck. Liverpool paid £600,000 for Raheem Sterling and sold him to Man City for £49m – Sterling earned Liverpool big bucks when he joined Man City in 2015. The Reds took him from QPR in 2010 and his move to Manchester also saw Rangers bank 20 per cent of the fee. James Rodriguez cost Porto €5m in 2010 and they sold him to Monaco for €45m in 2013 – Rodriguez was just 18 when Porto took him to Europe from Argentine club Banfield in 2010 for a small fee and a 70 per cent share of the players registration. Monaco then stumped up about £38.5m three years later, with Real Madrid paying the French club £63m in 2014. Porto have a habit of making profits on players and along with Rodriguez you can also mention the likes of Hulk (5m from Tokyo Verdy and sold to Zenit for 40m), Falcao (£3m from River Plate, sold to Atletico for £35m) and others to this list. 10 Man United spent £12m on Cristiano Ronaldo and sold him to Real Madrid for £80m – Once again Real Madrid helped another club make a profit when they paid a then world record fee for Ronaldo in 2009. He was just an exciting 18-year-old when Man United swooped on Sporting in 2003, but morphed into one of the best players on the planet prompting Real to move. He has only grown in stature over there. 10 10 Liverpool sold Jordon Ibe to Bournemouth for £15m after paying Wycombe £750,000 for him – Ibe was plucked from obscurity at Wycombe when he was just 16 in 2011, with the Reds paying an undisclosed fee, reported to be £750,000. After 58 games, Bournemouth spent a club record £15m on the winger in 2016. 10 Chelsea signed Nemanja Matic for £22m three years after using him as a makeweight in David Luiz transfer – It was quite a remarkable deal when Chelsea re-signed midfielder Matic in 2014. Three years earlier he was valued at around £3m when the club paid Benfica £21.3m for David Luiz, sending Matic to the club as part of the deal. However, Matic flourished in Portugal and Jose Mourinho corrected the mistake and was able to do so by selling Kevin de Bruyne to Wolfsburg for around £18m. Zinedine Zidane cost Juventus £3m but he was sold to Real Madrid for £46m – In 2001 Real Madrid made Zidane footballs most expensive player after five years in Italy becoming the outstanding player we know. There is a well-known story in England where the player was apparently offered to Blackburn. However, chairman Jack Walker reportedly asked why would we want Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood? 10 10 Barcelona spent just over £2m on Luis Figo and sold him to Real Madrid for £37m – Yep, its Real Madrid again. The Spanish heavyweights are more often than not forced to pay sky rocket prices for players, but this transfer is one of the most controversial in football. Five years spent cultivating a reputation as one of footballs best players, winning successive leagues and Spanish Cups ended in 2000 with his move to Madrid. But at least Barca were well compensated for the betrayal. The Italian champions picked him up for next to nothing when he left Old Trafford for in 2012 when his contract expired, with a tribunal ordering the club to pay a reported fee amounting to less than a £1m for the 19-year-old midfielder. Paul Pogba’s record transfer is almost complete.Man United nearly have their man four years after letting him leave for next to nothing and the midfielder will now not return to Juventus after his summer holiday.The £100million deal will be a record move and represents a very tidy profit for Juve.
